It was named after the fortress that defended this south-eastern Vis shore from pirate attacks and was located around a hundred meters from the village.
Podstražje was built on the formerly busiest crossroads of pojorski that connect it with the small bay and shore settlements of the south-eastern part of the island such as Milna and Ženka, Bargujac, Rukavac, and Srebrna.
Here there are two relatively well-visited family farms: Postrožje and Ferol whilst accommodation is provided in a number of apartments and converted old stone houses.
